a short-term deal under the tree? plus, the nra not backing off its so-called solution to school gun violence. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed securing our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> that's the wrong debate to have if you want to talk about protecting our children. >> but, first, don't go looking up the chimney for a deal on the fiscal cliff. there are just eight days, that's it, until the deadline to reach a deal, and there was little progress as lawmakers left town for the holiday. before the president took off for his hawaiian vacation with his family on friday, he pressured kfshs to pass a smaller deal, to delay those automatic spending cuts and to extend tax cuts for all except for the wealthiest of americans. now, while senators on both sides of the aisle, they spoke in support of at least a smaller deal on sunday. joe lieberman seemed to have less hope. >> it's the first time that i feel that it's more likely that we will go over the cliff than not, and that if we allow that to happen, it will be the most colossal consequential

, should a plan include the n.r.a.'s call for putting an armed officer in every school? >> it's total nonsense. >> reporter: no, is the answer from andrei nikitchyuk, whose eight-year-old son was in the hallway at sandy hook elementary school as bullets flew nearby. the solution, he says, is gun control. >> why are we allowing sales of weapons? that is terrible in this country. >> reporter: that is shared by some parents in washington, d.c., where the son of bola aina attends school. >> no, we don't want guns in our school. >> reporter: but some parents here disagree. armed guards, they say, could be part of the answer. >> i think any effort to-- to protect our children is worth it. >> one of the difficulties is being every place, everywhere, all the time. >> reporter: school safety expert ronald stephens says having armed guards at schools could help, but he notes there was an armed deputy sheriff at columbine high school in colorado more than a decade ago. he was unable to stop the killing of 13 people by two heavily armed students. studies show that security measures can make stude

to the newtown attack. bill plante is at nra headquarters in fairfax, virginia, just outside of washington. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, norah. the nra is one of washington's most powerful lobbying groups. but for four days after the killings in newtown, it had nothing to say. nothing on its website, on facebook or on twitter. but tuesday with politicians of every stripe now calling for some kind of action, the nra broke its silence. saying that it was shocked, saddened, and heartbroken by the murders and that it had refrained from commenting out of respect for the families. in a statement the nra said it is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. and that it will offer more details at a news conference on friday. in congress, the leader of senate republicans joined the chorus of politicians who are suggesting that something needs to be done. >> as we continue to learn the facts congress will examine whether there is an appropriate and constitutional response that would better protect our citizens. >> reporter: the white house spok

. much has been brought up about gun control. the nra has been silent, but that changes today. doug is live in washington. they're going to have a press conference today, right? >> they are. we're going to hear directly from them about what happened last week. the president also and perhaps much of the nation will observe a moment of silence this morning to mark one week since the horrific killings at sandy hook elementary school last week. just as the national rifle association prepares to publicly respond to new gun control efforts, the president is also addressing what the administration says is the fastest growing effort they've ever seen on they're we the people petition site with more than 400,000 signature, they say, to back forms of new gun control legislation. the president took to youtube to send a message to congress. >> i called on congress to take up and pass common sense legislation that has the support of a majority of the american people, including banning the sale of military style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips and making sure criminals can't ta

of gun owners who say, you know what? this time we've got to do things differently. >> what about the nra? >> well, the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers and i would expect that they have been impacted by this as well and hopefully they will do some self-reflection and. here's what we know. that any single gun law can't solve all these problems. we're going to have to look at mental health issues. we'll have to look at schools. there are going to be a whole range of things that joe's group looks at. we know that issues of gun safety will be an element of it. and, you know, what wave seen over the past 20 years, 15 years, is the sense that anything related to guns is somehow an encroachment on the second amendment. what we're looking for here is a thoughtful approach that says, we can preserve our second amendment, we can make sure that responsible gun owners are able to carry out their activities, but, that we're going to actually be serious about the safety side of this. that we're going to be serious about making sure that something like newtown or auro
